About the Vale of Glamorgan Methodist Circuit

The Vale of Glamorgan circuit was formed from the amalgamation of the Barry and Penarth circuits and officially came into being on 1st September 2009. The Barry circuit was created in 1955 from the Penarth and Barry circuit which had been in existence since 1933 when the Cardiff and and Penarth circuits joined.

The new Vale of Glamorgan circuit manages churches in Barry, Penarth, Dinas Powys and St Athan as well as the Amelia Trust farm. To see a map of all our churches have a look at our areamap page.

Some of the churches in the circuit include the Barry Methodist Church, Porthkerry Road which was opened in 1889. Albert Road Methodist Church, Penarth was built in 1907 to replace the Arcot Street Chapel that was destroyed by fire. The Holton Road Methodist Church was opened in 1911. The Barry Island Wesleyan Methodist Church was opened in 1902.

The Vale of Glamorgan circuit is part of the Wales Synod which is a district comprising 17 circuits in Wales as can be seen on this map.

What is a circuit?

The Methodist Circuit is part of the organisational structure of Methodism, or at least those branches which are derived from the work of John Wesley. It is a group of individual Societies or local Churches under the care of one or more Methodist Ministers. In the scale of organisation, the Circuit is about mid-way. Upwards, Circuits are grouped in Districts. The Districts form the Connexion which is the overall national Methodist Church. Downwards from the Circuit, a Class is the main sub-division of a local Church. This overall structure derives from John Wesley's organisational genius. This organisational structure does not apply to many non-Wesleyan branches of Methodism, nor to some of those which split away from Wesleyan Methodism, such as the Wesleyan Reform Union.
